Happy Mothering Sunday

A very happy Mothering Sunday to all mothers everywhere, but especially to those associated with our extended family. Lots of virtual hugs and kisses to each of you.

We remembered our Mum today and did her proud with a card, flowers and chocolates (Maltesers, her favourite, no less) as you can see in our picture. She was very pleased with us all.

If you look closely, you will also see Bris and Gio with a delightful posy of flowers that they were about to hand over to our Mum. This posy came from one of our churches and was lovingly made, along with lots more, by one of our young 80+ year olds, who is an inspiration to us all. It had a lovely red and yellow tulip, some daffodil buds and some greenery.

We all enjoyed the Mothering Sunday service and, in the talk, we had fun playing true or false with some of the facts about mothers. Can you believe that it is true that one lady had 69 children! It was just a shame that families were not together in the pews this year. Hopefully they would have been meeting up later.

Spring is Here

Our spirits have all been lifted by such a wonderful sunny start to spring. It hasn't been all play for us though, and the B.U. woodsbears have been beavering away (literally) all weekend at a huge pile of wood which has been salvaged, with permission, following hedge cutting in the churchyard.

The huge ivy covered heap of wood was tackled enthusiastically, but safely, with axes. Stripping the ivy off was a back breaking task, but it is true that many paws make light work. Patrick was excused as he needed to cheer his side on to victory in the Six Nations Rugby tournament. His passionate support clearly did the trick and you couldn't have found a happier bear anywhere, when Ireland won the Grand Slam.

The rest of us felt we had earned our celebratory pint of Guinness as a reward for all our hard work which you can see in our next picture.

Tommy and Rocco found plenty of signs that spring has arrived on their walk in some local woods. They found so much frogspawn that Tommy decided he must think seriously about building a pond in the B.U. garden.

Bris and Gio came back from the church service they went to this morning full of smiles. Some wonderfully crafted Mothering Sunday gifts had been given out: handmade boxes with heart shaped chocolates inside.

You may be thinking that Bris & Gio are neither ladies or mothers and of course you are right. They were lucky that there were some spares and who could resist such charming furry faces?

Lots of love and a Happy Mothers Day to all our female readers,

The Simnel Cake gets a Thumbs Up

We had a special Mothering Sunday service at one of our village churches and we all went along.

Bris and Jimmy helped out with the distribution of posies of flowers and were pleased that their busy paws had prepared sufficient quantities for everyone present, not just mothers, to have a lovely posy of daffodils to take home.

We were all very impressed with the simnel cake that the Vicar had prepared and talked about in his sermon. This is often associated with Easter but we found out that originally it was given by servant girls to their mothers when they went home on Mothering Sunday, so it is more properly a Mothering Sunday cake.

We were all able to have a slice of this delicious cake with our coffee after the service. As Bris and Jimmy had been so helpful with the flowers they got to have the first slice and here we see Jimmy eagerly awaiting the cutting of the cake.

We especially liked the marzipan topping and the marzipan balls on the top of the cake. Did you know that the 12 balls represent the 12 apostles? Have the sharp eyed among you also spotted the fair trade chocolate wafers on the table?

Happy Mothering Sunday to all Mothers

We thought we'd blog early today so we could remind our readers that today is Mothers Day (or more properly Mothering Sunday) and so give anyone who has forgotten a chance to pop out and buy a card and some flowers.

Being well organised bears we popped out yesterday to buy a nice big bunch of flowers for our female minder who is our proxy mother (what happens to real bear mothers is too complicated to explain in this blog).

After getting the flowers home it was time for us all to sign the card. As there are so many of us we only just managed to get all the names on, especially as we all wanted to add a big kiss. We also got Nibbles the hamster to add his paw print.

Needless to say Chef Oakley will be in action shortly to rustle up a special Mothering Sunday lunch and we'll be doing the washing up of course.

Lots of love, all at Bears Unlimited xxx
